A Piece of Eternity

New book on the Astronomical Art Clock presented

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Astronomical Art Clock in the German Watch Museum Glashütte on 17 October 2025, a new book on the Art Clock has been published. It is entitled “A Piece of Eternity” and deals in great detail with the creation, the builder, the special features and the past revisions of this unique clock.

The publication begins with a chapter on the history of time measurement. This begins with an explanation of the astronomical principles on the basis of which the calendars were derived and, ultimately, the clocks were created. Chapter two is dedicated to the builder of the Art Clock, Hermann Goertz. His eventful life and his time in Glashütte are traced in detail – more than three decades of which are accompanied by the work on his “great clock”. Chapters three and four describe the clock with its functions and technical features as well as the past revisions. They are the climax and aim of the publication. After four previous revisions in the history of the Art Clock, this was the fifth time the clock had undergone extensive maintenance. It was completed at the end of August 2025. Its documentation formed the basis for the book and provides interesting insights into the work carried out.

The book is only available in German. If you are interested in purchasing the book, please send an e-mail to shop@uhrenmuseum-glashuette.com
