At the outset it hosts the German Watchmaking School founded in 1878. Growing numbers of students make extensive additions necessary in 1923. While the building survives the Second World War effectively intact, a 1976 fire in the roof timbering causes considerable damage. The building is quickly rebuilt, as the importance of the \u201cEngineering School for Precision Mechanics\u201d reaches well beyond the city of Glash\u00fctte.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row us_custom_2eec13b6 via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-3\/5 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>German unification and its consequences bring an end, for a time, to the Engineering School. At the same time, new manufactories begin production throughout Glash\u00fctte and give new life to the Legend of Glash\u00fctte.<br \/>\nIn this same period the desire arises to give the exhibits in the small Glash\u00fctte watch museum a more dignified home and to create a representative museum. This leads to the founding in 2006 of the \u201cGlash\u00fctte German Watch Museum Foundation \u2013 Nicolas G. On May 22, 2008 the museum is officially opened to the public. The exhibits come from the collections of the City of Glash\u00fctte, Glash\u00fctte Original and individual lenders. The new enterprise is well aware of the building&#8217;s role as host to the historic watchmaking school: Along with the two floors given over to the museum, the building houses Glash\u00fctte Original&#8217;s \u201cAlfred Helwig\u201d watchmaking school.
